A BIG thank you to Allen H. Hurlbert (UNC Chapel Hill) for kindly pointing out to us that the areas of breeding distributions of roughly 2% of mammals included in the data set of our recent Molecular Ecology paper (http://dx.doi.org/10.5061/dryad.sb175), were reported in m2 rather than km2. We have corrected this situation and made the updated version of the data available in Dryad for continued public use (here's the new link). Although the Dryad repository will automatically present V2 to users attempting to view or download the data, please note that V1 will still be available for comparison in the same repository. Please also be aware that we have re-estimated all models originally included in our MEC paper and that we are happy to report that the qualitative nature of our findings remains unchanged. Specifically, a new PCA with the revised areas leads to similar components to the ones reported in our original Table 1:
... and all MCMCglmm models estimated using the new PCA scores continue yielding strong evidence of the same effects (or lack thereof) of environmental harshness (PC1) and rainfall upredictability (PC3) on the number of subspecies per species reported in our MEC paper:
Our heartfelt apologies for this temporary oversight and thanks again to our colleagues at UNC for bringing it to our attention. Our commitment to open data and open science remains as strong as ever!
